American Austrian Foundation (AAF)
“In 1993, The American Austrian Foundation in close collaboration with The Open Society Foundations established the Open Medical Institute to bridge the gap between physicians from the former Communist world and the West and to prevent brain drain.
Austrian and American physicians unilaterally agreed to act as faculty for week long seminars in Salzburg in all areas of medicine. From 1993 to 2013 more than 15,000 young, highly qualified, English speaking physicians from countries in transition participated in 425 seminars. Many of them also benefitted from observerships in Austrian hospitals resulting in life long professional and personal relationships with their mentors and colleagues.“
